Maybe specialization and generalization can be thought of as a contiunuum of learning strategies. Specialization is highly correlated with linear thinking and going down rabbit holes of discovery, and generalization is more about associate thinking and trying to synthesize information into a new understanding.

As to writing for a "general reader", I tend to think of myself as writing for a lay audience, which is about the same as a general reader -- I assume the reader knows no more than the basics of whatever subject I want to talk about and go from there. That's what a lot of pop science books do as well, which -- like you -- I often end up skimming the much of first part after I've read a couple on a subject. The alternative is to write for a professional audience, which is mostly -- I think -- only going to work for very specialized books, journal articles etc.
